My Movie Ratings System

The five star system is my favorite way to rate movies. A four star system has no easy selection for an average movie and a three star system is just too simplistic for me.

5 Stars - A masterpiece of its genre. The direction, acting, music, design, special effects and story are firing on all cylinders to create a perfect film.

4 Stars - A great movie with a few minor flaws, like a weak subplot or distracting castmember. Sometimes an average movie with one genius aspect to it (thrilling plot, an award-level acting performance, or amazing chemistry between the leads, etc.) can earn it 4 stars.

3 Stars - An average movie, worth a watch, but forgettable afterwards. It still works despite flaws like a clichéd story, uneven pacing, predictible mystery or unfocused direction. Some films burdened by unfair expectations or too avant-garde at the time may need to be seen again before they can be appreciated. Films that get better with repeat viewings can move up the rankings over time and vice-versa.

2 Stars - A bad movie with enough redeeming qualities to keep me watching. It has an entertaining actor or the story has hooked me enough to get to the end despite bad acting, shoddy special effects, plot holes or weak action scenes. (This rating includes the "So Bad it is Good" films.)

1 Star - A horrible film, so bad or boring that I fall asleep, walk out or fast-forward to the end so at least I can get some closure.

(Most of the films in my collection are at least 4 or 5 stars. The only exceptions are three star films I own for nostalgia reasons. I loved them when I was younger, but they may have not aged very well. There are also a few films that make it due to one amazing scene, like the Christopher Walken/Dennis Hopper scene in "True Romance" or the Europe sidetrip in "Rules of Attraction".)

Film: Croupier (1998)

Blu-Ray

Review: This is first film I saw with Clive Owen in the lead role and it made me a big fan. He plays, Jack, a struggling writer who reluctantly takes a job as a dealer in a London casino after a recommendation by his father. While Jack has the talent and instinct to be a successful gambler himself, he would rather use his skills to watch other's lose while writing about his experience at the casino in a book. When he is offered $20,000 to cause a distraction during a robbery, he is tempted to break his personal hatred of cheats. It is hard to believe that this low-key neo-noir film was made by the same director as Flash Gordon.

Quotes:
"Do you believe in astrology?"
"Absolutely not. But then, I'm a Gemini, and Geminis don't believe in astrology."

"Gambling's not about money... Gambling's about not facing reality, ignoring the odds."
"I must be a fool - I never think about the odds."

"How do I look?"
"Like trouble."

"A wave of elation came over him; he was hooked again... watching people lose."

"Now he had become the still center of that spinning wheel of misfortune. The world turned 'round him leaving him miraculously untouched. The croupier had reached his goal. He no longer heard the sound of the ball."

"He's a good customer."
"A good customer is a consistent loser... but is that what he meant?"

"You didn't recognize the man who attacked you did you?"
"Of course I fucking recognized him."
"You did?"
"I know a cheat when I see one... the man was a cheat."

"Hang on tightly, let go lightly."

Film: The Blood of Heroes (1988)

DVD: Full Screen

Review: This was a favorite of mine when it came out and I was happy to see it held up when I watched it again. In this dystopian sci-fi film, Joan Chen plays a young woman who plays for her local village's team in the only sport left in this post-apocalyptic world. When her team plays a roving team of professionals who visit her village, she convinces them to let her join them after their qwik is injured in the brutal bout. Rutger Hauer plays Sallow, the talented veteran who coaches her as they move from town to town playing the locals. When she learns that Sallow once played for the League in one of the underground cities, she talks the team into attempting a Challenge match for the scouts of the League. Unfortunately, the DVD has a bad transfer and the underground/night scenes are too dark.

Quotes:
"Your qwik is ruined. Can't run anymore. Spoiled... I've got speed. I can run. I'll qwik for you."
"He'll heal. He always does."
"Dog shit."

"Can't pass an old man?"
"I didn't see him."
"You've got to know where everybody is always."
"What if I can't?"
"They'll crush your skull."

"If he was in the League, why is he playing dog ranges in market towns now?"
"It was a long time ago, Sallow was very young."

"You made him leave the League because of a woman?"
"A special woman."
"Special?"
"An elegant lady."
"Sallow with an elegant lady? An elegant lady wouldn't be with him."
"You don't understand. It's different in the League. In the League you are almost one of them. Almost."

"I told you two juggers can't fuck after the game. It's doesn't work unless you like rubbing wounds against wounds."

"Gonzo!"
"Who wants to know?"
"You could have won in 20."
"You look like shit."
"I want a challenge. This is my qwik."
"They'll never accept, not with you?"
"So, he still remembers me?"
"Get out of the Red City. Old burns don't heal like young burns."
"Thought we were the same age, you and me."
"We used to be."
"Long time without a mirror?"

"This is ridiculous, no one comes to these things. They are not contests at all."
"Nevertheless, they can be quite brutal. Much more so than the League games."
"I don't like brutality. I like heroics. I like the blood of heroes."

"You protected him, you asshole."
"Lord Vile, I've broken juggers in half, smashed their bones and left the ground behind me wet with brains. I'd do anything to win. but I've never hurt a soul for any reason but to put a dog skull on a stake and I never will."
"But you didn't put any fucking dog skull on any fucking stake. No challenge has ever gone past the 26th stone. This one won't get 26 more."

"Walk... slowly."

Film: Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)

Blu-Ray

Review: This is my favorite of the Narnia books and I think they did a great job with the movie. Edmund and Lucy return to the magical world with their annoying cousin, Eustace, through a painting of a Narnian ship where they meet King Caspian as he sails across the sea to locate the seven exiled Lords of Telmar. I can see why they added a subplot about an evil mist emanating from the Dark Island to add an overarching enemy to the story since in the book they just sailed from island to island in the Dawn Treader encountering individual threats. I wish this film had the same higher budget as the first two films since the CGI in this one is a little weaker at times.

Quotes:
"Squirt? He barely has two years on me. I'm a king. I've fought wars and I've led armies."
"Not in this world."

"What's so fascinating about that picture, anyway? It's hideous."
"You won't see it from the other side of the door."
"Edmund, it looks like the water is actually moving."

"That giant rat thing just tried to claw my face off!"
"I was merely trying to expel the water from your lungs, sir."
"It talked! Did you see? Did anyone just hear that? It talked!"
"He always talks."
"Actually, it's getting him to shut up that's the trick."

"Since you left us, the Giants of the North surrendered unconditionally. Then we defeated the Calormen armies at the Great Desert. There is peace across all of Narnia."
"Peace?"
"In just three years."
"Hang on, if there are no wars to fight and no one is in trouble, then why are we here?"
"It's a good question. I've been asking myself the same thing."

"I'm not your subject."
"You've been waiting for this, haven't you? To challenge me? You doubt my leadership?"
"You doubt yourself."
"You're a child."
"And you're a spineless sap! I'm tired of playing second fiddle. First it was Peter and now it's you! You know I'm braver than both of you. Why do you get Peter's sword? I deserve a kingdom of my own. I deserve to rule."

"What was that? Is it a volcano?"
"Oh, no. That's no volcano. All hands on deck there. Archers, arm yourselves."

"Trouble sleeping? Now, now. All is not lost as it seems. I'll stay up with you if you wish... Keep you company. I'll wager you didn't even believe in dragons this morning. I could tell you one or two of my adventures if you like, to pass the time. Believe it or not, you're not the first dragon I've encountered. Many years ago, too many than I care to mention, I was with a band of pirates. I met another dragon, much fiercer than you..."

"So, what was it like... when Aslan changed you back?"
"No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't do it myself. Then he came towards me. It sort of hurt, but... it was a good pain. You know, like when you pull a thorn from your foot. Being a dragon wasn't all bad. I mean, I think I was a better dragon than I was a boy, really. I'm so sorry for being such a sop."

Film: Above the Law (1988)

Blu-Ray

Review: Steven Seagal's first film, introducing the effective action template he would follow for his next several films, especially 'Out for Justice'. The story is simple, Nico, an ex-CIA agent during Vietnam turned Chicago police officer has uncovered a plot by some of his past associates to assassinate a senator. Using his Akido martial art skills, he takes down wave after wave of thugs, armed and unarmed, who attempt to stop him throughout the film. Entertaining and it has aged well.

Quotes:
"What the hell kind of high is this?"
"Sky-high. Military explosives. C-4, my man, C-4."

"This maniac should be wearing a number, not a badge."

"You're gonna need me."
"Need you? For what?"
"To get your ass outta jail."
"You think you can afford my bail?"

"I don't think you can take us all, badass."
"No, but I'll get an A for effort."

"Tell me something old buddy, do we kill our own senators now?"
"Why not? The Romans did."
"Are we the fucking Romans?"
"We're an empire too."

"Not one C.I.A. agent has ever been tried, much less accused of any crimes. You guys think you're above the law. Well, you ain't above mine."

Film: The Contender (2000)

DVD: Anamorphic

Review: A political thriller with great acting from the whole cast. Joan Allen plays a female senator picked by the President to replace the VP who died in the middle of his second term. Opposing her appointment, the House Committee Chairman uncovers a salacious college incident from the senator's past and attempts to use it against her to sink her confirmation. A tiny bit of preachiness is the only thing that keeps the film from 5 Stars.

Quotes:
"Who doesn't want a shortcut to greatness?"

"So, how are Will and the boy?"
"Let's forego the small talk today, Shelly, I'm not in the mood."
"Let the big talk begin."

"It seems to me that all you can claim about me... claim, is that I had sex."
"Deviant sex."
"Oh, deviant? Who says it was deviant?"
"I do. What I say, the American people will believe. And do you know why? Because I will have a very big microphone in front of me."

"The people of this nation can stomach quite a bit. But the one thing they can't stomach is the image of a vice president with a mouthful of cock."

"Principles only mean something when you stick to them when its inconvenient."

"I should have come down here and pointed my finger your way... pointed my finger YOUR way, and asked, 'Have you no decency, sir?'"

Film: Charlotte's Web (2006)

DVD: Enhanced 16x9

Review: I loved this book as a kid, reading it so many times that I practically knew it by heart. Normally that is a bad sign for the movie, but what is amazing about this live action adaption is how well it captures the story. I don't know what came over me, but it touched me so much that I found myself crying throughout the movie, even during the happy parts.

When I first heard about this movie, I was afraid they might have Dakota Fanning overwhelm the main focus between Wilbur and Charlotte, but she played the perfect supporting role.

Quotes:
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing, now go back to bed."
"You're not going to kill it, are you?"
"It's a runt."

"So you eat flies?"
"No... no, no. I drink their blood."

"Look at her! Don't you think she's a little... uh... what's the word? EW!"
"I think she's beautiful."

"I mean it was clear as day. T-E-R-R-I-F-I-C. I mean, can you believe a spider wrote that? I didn't learn how to spell that word until I was in the 10th grade!"

"Templeton, haven't you ever heard that good things come to those who wait?"
"No. Good things come to those who find it and shove it in their mouth!"

"No, my webs were no miracle, Wilbur. I was only describing what I saw. The miracle is you."

"Goodbye... my sweet, sweet Wilbur."
"Goodbye, Charlotte. I love you."

Film: Aspen Extreme (1993)

Blu-Ray

Review: This movie is a surprisingly effective drama about two close friends who move to Aspen to become ski instructors. T.J. has the looks and everything seems to come easy for him, but he struggles to find a deeper purpose in his life. His friend Dexter, trying to keep up with T.J.'s success, falls into drinking and drugs which causes a rift between them. There is a lot of great skiing footage and views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

SPOILER: I have one huge nitpick with this movie. They should not have tied the extreme skiing portion of the movie to the Powder 8 competition that T.J. and Dexter want to win. The Powder 8 is a precision team event where two competitors ski back and forth in tandem to create perfect figure-eights on a wide and evenly sloped course, but the script always has them extreme skiing off-piste as their only training method. It's the equivalent of playing hockey to train for a figure skating event.

The plot hole is compounded by T.J. winning the competition by skiing off-course with his partner, essentially cheating as they impress the crowd with extreme skiing and jump tricks that have nothing to do with the actual skills the event is judged on. If this had been a slap-stick ski comedy, I might have bought this craziness but it clashes with the real and dramatic tone of the rest of the movie.

Quotes:
"Where are you guys from?"
"Detroit."
"Out here to see if you can be ski instructors, huh?"
"Yeah."
"Ah, about a hundred of you guys show up every year for that. The locals call that the freshman class. You read about movie stars in ski magazines and you want to move here."
"Yeah, I mean, that's all part of it, right?"
"Hope you guys are good."

"I think you're making a real mistake in not hiring, Dexter, I mean he'd make a great ski instructor."
"How would you know? You have only been a ski instructor for 15 minutes."
"Well, I just know. He's a great guy."
"Our clients pay $400 a day for private lessons. For that they expect ski instructors to be a certain type and look... like you. Part of the job is fulfilling a fantasy and you are the fantasy. I'm afraid your friend is not. You ski very well."
"So does he."
"Skiing is the easy part."

"You can come pick T.J. up in the morning. He can stay the night here."
"Wait, how about I stay the night and T.J. comes and picks ME up in the morning, huh?"
"How about not."
"He might have a concussion, guys?"
"You got a lot of luck, T.J."
"I know."

"This isn't your swing."
"Nobody was using it."

"I'm gonna go home to Detroit. Put my name on the list of Ford, maybe get your old job. I just don't want to go back empty-handed. I would like to ask you a favor... Well, I want to win the Powder 8 and I want you to be my partner. I want you to ski with me."

"I just came by to tell you I'm very sorry, T.J. I know you loved him a lot... Things happen, T.J., to everyone."
"It didn't happen to me."
"Yeah, it did."
"You know, I was afraid to come out here without him."

Film: Avatar (2009)

Blu-Ray: Extended Edition

Review: I bought the Blu-Ray even before I had a HDTV because I knew I could only watch it again with a high quality display. It now looks amazing on my new TV. While pushing the limits of special effects, James Cameron still pays attention to the story. While some people complain that it was too simple or familiar, it is expertly-executed and paced. Zoe Saldana was great as Neytiri and brought the necessary emotion to give the film it's heart while Stephan Lang had the perfect blend of evil and humor as Colonel Quaritch. Sam Worthington brought the right excitement level as we experienced the new culture through his character, Jake Sully.

Quotes:
"You are not in Kansas anymore. You are on Pandora, ladies and gentlemen. Respect that fact every second of every day. If there is a Hell, you might wanna go there for some R&R after a tour on Pandora. Out there beyond that fence every living thing that crawls, flies, or squats in the mud wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubes. We have an indigenous population of humanoids called the Na'vi. They're fond of arrows dipped in a neurotoxin that will stop your heart in one minute - and they have bones reinforced with naturally occurring carbon fiber. They are very hard to kill. As head of security, it is my job to keep you alive. I will not succeed. Not with all of you."

"I'm gonna have to call it, guys. We're not allowed to run night ops. Colonel's orders. I'm sorry, Doc, he's just gonna have to hang on till morning."
"He won't make it till morning."

"Is the avatar safe?"
"Yeah, Doc, it's safe, and you are not gonna believe where I am!"

"Look, Sully, I want you to learn these savages from the inside, I want you to gain their trust. I need to know how to force their cooperation or hammer them hard if they won't."

"Ha, ha! That moron's going to die."
"Don't be afraid, warrior!"
"Make the bond."

"I came like this. This you. I turn."
"Yeah, yeah."
"I feel the wind. I turn very strong."
"Look, yeah, see, I banked so hard..."

"Tree of Souls. It's their most sacred place. See the Flux Vortex in these false color images?"
"Yeah, that's what messes up my instruments."
"There is something really interesting going on in their biologically. I would die to get samples. Outsiders are strictly forbidden. You lucky swine."

"You crossed the line. [PUNCH] Wheel this meat outta here..."

"You let me down son! So, you find yourself some local tail, and you just completely forget what team you're playin' for?"

"Shut your pie hole!"
"Or what, Ranger Rick? You gonna shoot me?"
"I can do that."
"You need to muzzle your dog."

"The Sky People have sent us a message... that they can take whatever they want. That no one can stop them. Well, we will send them a message. You ride out as fast as the wind can carry you. You tell the other clans to come. Tell them Toruk Macto calls to them! You fly now, with me! My brothers! Sisters! And we will show the Sky People... that they cannot take whatever they want! And that this... this is our land!"

"You're not the only one with a gun, bitch."

Film: Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Blu-Ray
Beauty and the Beast (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in DVD Packaging)

Review: I haven't seen this in almost twenty years. I enjoyed the songs and animation, but the love story between Belle and the Beast feels rushed. I wish they could have spent more time developing the growing attraction between them. The villain, Gaston, is great.

Quotes:
"So, you've come to stare at the BEAST, have you?"

"This is the day your dreams come true."
"What do you know about my dreams, Gaston?"
"Plenty! Here, picture this: A rustic hunting lodge, my latest kill roasting on the fire, and my little wife massaging my feet, while the little ones play on the floor with the dogs. We'll have six or seven."
"Dogs?"
"No, Belle! Strapping boys, like me!"

"You'll come out, or I'll-I'll-I'll break down the door!"
"Master, I could be wrong, but that might not be the best way to win the girl's affections."
"Please. Attempt to be a gentlemen."
"But, she's being so DIFFICULT!"

"Aaargh! That hurts!"
"If you'd hold still, it wouldn't hurt as much!"
"Well if you hadn't have run away, this wouldn't have happened."
"If you hadn't frightened me, I wouldn't have run away!"

"She's as crazy as the old man. The beast will make off with your children. He will come after them in the night. We are not safe until his head is mounted on my wall. I say we kill the BEAST!"

Film: Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

DVD: Anamorphic
Charlie Wilson's War (Widescreen)

"Why is Congress saying one thing and doing nothing?"
"Well, tradition mostly."

Review: This film reveals a relatively unknown chapter of the Cold War, how a Congressman used his position to fund a covert operation to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan. The excellent script by Aaron Sorkin is tight, funny & informative all at the same time. Mike Nichols got great performances out of Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

"Unless I am wrong, and that would be unusual for me, you sit at the intersection of the State Department, the Pentagon and the CIA. You meet in a soundproof room underneath the Capitol, and you preside over a secret and unlimited budget for the three agencies you would need to conduct a covert war. Isn't that right?"
"I also have seats at the Kennedy Center."

"I've been with the company for 24 years. I was posted in Greece for 15. Papandreou wins that election if I didn't help the junta take him prisoner. I've advised and armed the Hellenic Army. I've neutralized champions of Communism. I've spent the past three years learning Finnish! Which should come in handy here in Virginia!! And I'm never, ever, sick at sea. So I want to know why I'm not gonna be your Helsinki Station Chief."
"You're coarse."
"Excuse me?"
"For Helsinki, I need someone with diplomatic skills. You don't have them."
"Is that right?"
"That is right. And I don't know why the hell I didn't fire you when you broke my fucking window."

"How did it go?"
"Well, there were three of them. It was like getting slapped around by a Pakistani vaudeville team. You know you've pretty much hit rock bottom when you've been told you have character flaws by a man who hanged his predecessor in a military coup."

Film: Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

DVD: Enhanced 16x9
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

"You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember."

Review: This sequel is as well filmed as the first, but Prince Caspian was always one of my least favorite of the Narnia books so it wasn't as emotional as the last movie. Peter Dinklage as Trumpkin and Sergio Castellitto as King Miraz were standouts. I am looking forward to the third film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, my favorite Narnia book.

"I am High King Peter the Magnificent."
"You probably could have left off the last bit."
"Heh, heh, heh. Probably."

"We've anxiously awaited your return, my liege. Our hearts and swords are at your service."
"Oh my god, he's so cute."
"Who said that?!!"
"Um, sorry."

"There is still time to surrender."
"Well, feel free."
"How many more must die for the throne?"
"Just one."

Film: Collateral (2004)

DVD: Enhanced 16x9
Collateral (Two-Disc Special Edition)

"How long you think this'll take?"
"Seven minutes."
"Seven. Not eight? Not six?"
"Two minutes from the 110 to Normandie. Normandie to Venice, three minutes. Over to Union is one, plus one for 'shit happens'."
"Okay if I time you?"
"Knock yourself out."
"What do I get if you're wrong? A free ride?"
"An apology. Already offered my free ride today."

Review: This is another of Michael Mann's films that get better with each viewing. Tom Cruise gets a chance to play the villain and makes one of his best films. He plays a hitman who coerces a cab driver to drive him around the city all night as he completes his 5 tasks. Jamie Foxx is good as the other side of the complicated relationship that grows between them. Los Angeles at night has never been filmed so beautifully.

"He's not paying you a damn thing."
"Who the hell is this?"
"Albert Ricardo, Assistant U.S. Attorney, a passenger in this cab, and I'm reporting you to the D.M.V."
"Let's not, oh, let's not get excited."
"Not get excited? How am I supposed to not get excited? Listen, you try to extort a working man. You know goddamn well your collision policy and general liability umbrella will cover the damages. And what are you trying to pull, you sarcastic prick?"

"Why didn't you just kill me and get another cab driver?"
"Cause you're good. We're in this together. Fates intertwined. Cosmic coincidence, you know... all that crap."
"You're full of shit."

Constantine (Widescreen Edition)

"You are going to die young because you smoked 30 cigarettes a day since you were 15. And you're going to go to hell because of the life you took... You're fucked."

Review: This is Keanu Reeves best film since the first Matrix. He is good as the jaded demon hunter trying to buy his way back into heaven before he dies of lung cancer. The story is well-told with an excellent ensemble of actors and it has a great ending.

"Yesterday, I saw a soldier demon trying to chew its way out through a little girl."
"Listen, John, demons stay in hell, angels in heaven. The great détente of the original superpowers."
"Thanks for the history lesson, Midnite. You've been a tremendous help."

"So, do I have to take the rest of my clothes off or can I leave them on? John?"
"I'm thinking..."

The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition)

"Perhaps we can arrange a meet."
"Where are you now?"
"I'm sitting in my office."
"I doubt that."
"Why would you doubt that?"
"Because, if you were in your office right now we'd be having this conversation face-to-face."

Review: This is a great conclusion to the Bourne Trilogy. While it has allot of the same intense actions beats as the second film, it wraps up the mystery of Jason Bourne's original identity in a very satisfying way.

"Uh, sir. He drove off the roof."
"What?"
"He drove off the roof!"

"Why did you pick me?"
"You really don't remember, do you? We didn't pick you. You picked us. You volunteered. Right here. Right here, even after you were warned."

"What possessed you to invite vagabonds into your home?
"I'm not stupid! I had my bedroom door locked."
"Oh, then you were perfectly safe."
"I didn't sense any danger. If I had, I wouldn't have done it."
"No danger?! I got slugged twice in five seconds!"
"That was an accident! I'm sure when you got into bed you scared the hell out of Curly Sue."
"Curly Sue? That's cute! What is she, the lost Stooge?"

Review: This is one of John Hughes' last films. It is well-made and has an interesting story about a con-man drifter and his child, but it doesn't have the magic of his early films.

"Kiss my ass, lady. I've raised that kid from a baby and we've beat worse things than some do-good, high-rise legal eagle with a jones for arms-length social reform. Now step aside before I throw your pampered ass in the closet."
"You don't scare me."
"I got nothing to lose but that kid. You try taking that kid from me, I'm going to knock your damn head off."

"You know how many people would kill to have what you achieved in such a short amount of time? You got a partnership, a corner office big enough for basketball. What are you going to give it up for? Love? You got your value system all screwed up somewhere along the line."
"It was screwed up before."

"Yeah, well you don't wanna know me, lady. I'm a murderer and rapist of women."
"Really? Well, I guess I must make you nervous."

Review: This was a satisfying conclusion to the Alien trilogy. It was not as frightening as the earlier films but the dark atmosphere of the mining planet prison made up for it. Charles S. Dutton was great as the prisoner who found religion and I liked the fatalistic mood of Ripley and the other prisoners at the end.

"This is a maximum security prison, and you have no weapons of any kind?"
"We're on the honor system."
"Then we're fucked."

"When they first heard about this thing, it was 'Crew Expendable'. The next time they sent in Marines. They were expendable too. What makes you think they're gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space?"

Film: Body Heat (1981)

DVD: Enhanced 16x9
Body Heat (Deluxe Edition)

"A lot of them have tried that seat. You're the first I've let stay."
"You must come here a lot."
"Most men are little boys."
"Maybe you should drink at home."
"Too quiet."
"Maybe you shouldn't dress like that."
"This is a blouse and a skirt. I don't know what you're talking about."
"Then you shouldn't wear that body."

Review: An early role from one of my favorite actors, William Hurt. Kahleen Turner is excellent as the temptress who plays the strings of lawyer, Ned Racine, like a concert violinist to get exactly what she desires.

"How's the cop business, Oscar?"
"Real good. Always starts hopping in weather like this. When it gets this hot, people try to kill each other."

"Hey lady, ya wanna fuck?"
"Gee, I don't know... Maybe... This sure is a friendly town."
"I'm sorry."
"You are? You mean the offer is no good?"
"I feel like such a jerk."
"Well, maybe you were supposed to deliver it next door. You must be looking for the lady of the house."

Film: Alien (1979)

DVD: Anamorphic
Alien (The Director's Cut)

"I hate to bring this up but, uh, this a commercial ship, not a rescue ship..."
"Right."
"...and it's not in my contract to do this kind of duty. Now what about the money? If you wanna give me some money to do it, I'll be happy to, uh, t-to, you know, oblige."

Review: This was one of those R movies that I was too young to see when it came out, but a friend filled me in on the entire storyline. I still remember being fascinated by the description of the alien's acid blood melting down through the decks of the spaceship. It took me around twenty years before I actually saw it and it was as good as I imagined it would be.

"I haven't seen anything like that except, uh, molecular acid."
"It must be using it for blood."
"It's got a wonderful defense mechanism. You don't dare kill it."

"Here kitty, kitty, kitty. Miaow. Here Jonesy."

"Micro changes in air density, my ass."

Film: Black Snake Moan (2007)

DVD: Enhanced 16:9
Black Snake Moan

"It's already noon, Rae. Do you think those shorts should still be on?"
"Well if they weren't, you could kiss my rebel coochie, faggot."

Review: This is Samuel L. Jackson's best role in a while. Christina Ricci is very good as the troubled woman he attempts to cure after finding her beaten up and abandoned on the side of road near his farm. His unusual methods turn out to be just what she needs.

"Get this goddamn chain off me!"
"Look, girl, you been running wild on me! Between them fits and fever dreams you having, I been chasing you all over this place at night."
"Well, I'm woke now. You can take this off."
"No... You ain't right yet."

"Just go in there and talk to her. Please... And I fixing steaks for supper. I expect you to stay."
"You expect me to sit down and eat with that woman chained up the way she is?"
"R.L., you watch yourself in there. That girl be on your dick like stank on shit."
